I enter my mother’s room and tear through the insides of her wardrobe—but find nothing.
I return to my own room and notice how the lampshade resembles a hat.
I remove it from its base and place it atop my head.
I fasten it to my hair with laundry clips.
I stand before the mirror, admiring the reflection—they’ll all go crazy for me, I think.
I head back to my mother’s room, still searching for the key.
Then I step out onto the street—its features now faded from my memory.
I take my first steps down the alley, waiting for the world to see me—and lose their minds over me.
