However, an astute reader may tolerate the novelist’s choices, even if they differ from their own vision, to discover how a mischievous herdsman becomes a saint. The story begins with “Sidi Abdel Aati Zemesh,” the reins-holder and whip-bearer, titles explaining how ordinary acts by an outcast herdsman become miracles, thanks to “Berskal,” his daughter from his wife “Ghayat Al-Muna Iblis,” famed for her sorcery and supernatural powers.
