About the way of life in Egypt and the country’s features during the period from the end of the French campaign, through the era of Muhammad Ali’s rule and his rise to power, up until the plague that struck the country in 1835. This is portrayed through the life of a family from the grandfather to the son and grandchildren. The grandfather who participated in the resistance against the French campaign. The protagonist’s involvement in the Wahhabi war, his sufferings during it, and his struggle with the plague that devastated the land and its people years after his return, culminating with the death of his youngest daughter in the final part of the novel. The story also covers the measures taken by the state to control the situation, and the hardships endured by the country and ordinary people during those times—their way of life, the oppression they faced, alongside their joys and sorrows.
