After making it to the shortlist for the International Man Booker Prize in 2015, the renowned Arab novelist Ibrahim al-Koni published a novel titled The She-Camel of God through Kayan Publishing House in 2022. The story is set in the 1960s when the Sahara Desert was divided between nations, and large numbers of Tuaregs were imprisoned and displaced from their homeland, marking the beginning of their exile and wandering from their roots.
Ibrahim al-Koni’s novel features a she-camel named “Tamalalt” (wild buffalo). She is filled with longing and a deep yearning for her homeland, battling all obstacles to return to her land. Despite the efforts of her keeper and beloved, Asis, no remedy can soothe her painful nostalgia for her home. The novel’s events unfold like a poignant melody, brimming with poetry and nostalgia, while raising profound philosophical and spiritual questions about the meaning of homeland, freedom, and justice. It seems that al-Koni intended for his she-camel to symbolize the deep love for one’s homeland.
